Great news for all the Indian film lovers. Two excellent works of last year by director Neeraj Ghaywan and Leena Yadav’s that are “Masaan” and “Parched” which have been awarded at the 14th annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA). Actor Sanjay Mishra bagged the award for Best Actor for his work in “Masaan” by the Grand Jury.
Tannishtha Chatterjee, Radhika Apte, Surveen Chawla and Lehar Khan were together honoured ‘The Best Actress’ award for ‘Parched’. But that is not all. Director Vetrimaaran’s “Visaranai” which is an adaptation of the Tamil thriller novel “Lock Up” by M. Chandrakumar, awarded the “Grand Jury Prize” leaving both “Masaan” and Hansal Mehta’s “Aligarh” behind.
The jury revealed the reason behind it:
“This film took us to a very specific time and place while also shedding light on a universal phenomenon of displacement and vulnerability.”
Around 30 films from different style including features, documentaries, and shorts were selected. It also featured the North America festival also featured Anu Menon’s “Waiting” starring actress Kalki Koechlin, who was present at the ceremony. The film also featured another versatile actor Naseeruddin Shah in a lead role.
No doubt it is a prestigious moment for all of us. But the sad part is these movies were critically acclaimed but do not do well in the commercial market. This is the reason there are filmmakers with their unique thoughts and ideas can never make it big in Bollywood and some aspiring directors just get lost in all the glitters of Bollywood.
