The long-awaited biopic Dangal, starring Amir Khan is scheduled to release on 23rd of December 2016. Amir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat who is not only the proud father of these two medals winning sisters but also the one to teach them wrestling. The film got its name from the native name of the game. Though a biopic, this film is based on drama and showcases different sides and faces of the Indian society.
The film is a biopic of two sisters Babita Kumari and Geeta Phogat who were the first female wrestlers to win medals at Commonwealth Games.
“In our society, especially in backwards areas, most families want a son to carry forward their legacy and if they end up with daughters, very few give them equal opportunities. But Phogat, who hails from Balali village near Bhiwani in Haryana, encouraged all his four daughters to become wrestlers.”
Director Nitesh Tiwari has been heard of having high expectation regarding Dangal. He has also said that films like this are much significant with respect to the social status violence against women in the present day society.
Amir Khan has played two distinct characters in the film. Rajkumar Rao, who was seen in the film Talaash will also be seen in an important character in the film Dangal. It is rumoured that Mallika Sherawat was also auditioned for a cast in Dangal. After auditioning around 70 actresses, Sakshi Tanwar has been cast as Daya Kaur, the wife of Mahavir Singh Phogat. New face VJ Aparshakti Khurrana, brother of Ayushman Khurrana has also been cast in the film.
